Fall Carpentry Classes

I’m pleased to offer a couple of carpentry classes this fall, in October. The courses are as follows:

Course 1. Japanese Joinery (II): Corner Joints. October 13~16th.

A 4-day course where we will look at applications for, and techniques for making, various types of Japanese corner joints. These joints to be studied and cut out will have wide applicability in both timber carpentry and furniture making. We will cover as many joints as time allows.

Course 2. Hoppers. October 20~23rd

A 4-day course exploring the geometry and cut out of splayed boxes. This is the gateway to compound joinery work and roof work in general. We’ll cover butted and mitered joints in regular plan, irregular plan and polygonal configurations. also to be covered will be related applications, such as the fitting of angled boards into and around corners. Students are expected to have familiarity with the material contained within The Art of Japanese Carpentry Drawing, Volumes I and II.

Tuition for each course is $750, or if both courses are taken in sequence, $1400.00

Materials will be provided. All classes to be held at my workshop in Leeds, MA. Students are responsible for bringing their own hand tools to the course. We will use both hand tools and power tools to cut the joinery. Students are responsible for transport to and from the workshop location, and lodging and food during the course duration. A suggested tool list will be provided to all confirmed participants.

Note: both classes involve material which presupposes student familiarity with the fundamentals of tool use, sharpening, etc. These courses are not intended for beginners.

Participation is limited to 6 students for each course, and with a minimum of two participants for the courses to proceed. Register soon to secure your spot.

The process to register is: contact me directly (azumadesignbuild@gmail.com), indicating your interest in the course(s). I will then put you on a provisional list of intending participants. In the first week of September I will invoice each participant for 50% of course tuition. The balance of tuition will then be invoiced in the first week of October. Classes will run 9:00am to 5:00pm each day.

Hope to see you there!
